Super 14 Rugby final result
Durban. South Africa.
Saturday,19 th May,2007
The crowd cheers after the Bulls first try by Pierre Spies in the final of the Super 14 Rugby Finals between the Bull and the Sharks. Both South African teams qualified for the final in a history making moment last weekend.
At the half-time whistle, the score was 14 -10 in favour of the Durban home side, the Sharks, following a try by J.P. Petersen, penalty and conversion kicks by Montgomery. Only good, solid defense by the Bulls on their own try line, has saved the scoreboard for the Bulls. The Bulls had lady luck on their side at the kick-off,when their star player was nearly red carded following a late and dangerous tackle on the fullback of the Sharks,Percy Montgomery.
During the break, locker room cameras showed the Bulls coach,Heineke Meyer giving the Bulls a tongue lashing as opposed to Dick Muir's quite demeanor.
In the 45th min, Hougaard missed a 35 meter penalty kick which came short and would have brought the Bulls within 1 point of the Sharks.A titanic forward battle followed with both sides gaining and losing ground across the field.
In the 55th minute Albert van den Berg nearly went over in the corner but the Bulls defense held firm.
Hougaard added another 3 penalty points to his tally with a 25 min penalty kick bringing the score 14-13 in favor of the Sharks. In the 66 th minute Sharks fly-half Butch James knocked the ball on in his own in goal area but the Bulls could not capitalize on this fortune and lost possession of the ball.
With 9 minutes to go on the clock,it was still anybodies game. The Bull Jaco van der Westhuizen missing a drop kick attempt handing possession back to the Sharks.
The Sharks the took advantage of a penalty line kick and Albert van den berg went over for a try bringing the score to 19-13 and then Steyn missed the conversion which could have won the Sharks the Final.
The Bull immediately went on a renewed attack, swinging the ball all over the field with Brian Habena going over for a try next to the posts. Hougaard converted and the Bulls won by 20 to 19 to become the 2007 Super 14 Rugby Champions.
